Every year, thousands of people travel to Italy to visit churches and museums—the Florence Duomo, St. Peter’s basilica, the Vatican museum, the Uffizi. They seek beauty by such artists as Michelangelo, Raphael, Giotto, Leonardo, but little do they know that the beauty they contemplate in Italy can be found in North America. More than 200 churches in Canada and the New England states were decorated by Italian-born artist Guido Nincheri who brought the techniques and aesthetics of his home country with him when he immigrated. Dubbed the Michelangelo of Montreal, Nincheri infused Italy in the churches he decorated.
Unfortunately, few are aware of this wealth of artistic treasure that adorns the walls, windows, and ceilings of our local churches. But Nincheri is a name that should be known. Join me as I explore his art and the churches he decorated…
The Artist
Guido Nincheri (1885-1972), dubbed the Michelangelo of Montreal, was an Italian-Canadian artist who decorated more than 200 churches in Canada and New England. Read a short biography here.

The Book
My biography of Guido Nincheri is titled The Art and Passion of Guido Nincheri (Véhicule Press, 2018). The books looks at some of the artist’s most important works and shows the extent of Nincheri’s passion for his art. The book also contains 32 colour plates as well as black & white photographs interspersed throughout the text.
